This short little film has inspired me today to add a new healing modality to my life. I have always loved the forest. I am most at peace & feel the closest to the Creator when I am walking through one. Some of the most significant & spiritual moments in my life have happened in a forest or with trees. That is one of the main reasons I moved back to the PNW & chose this area to live in. I can't even explain how I feel EVERY time I enter the Olympic National Rain forest boundary. (Which is at least 3 times a week & it happens every time...) I want to add this or make it a part of my life on a more regular basis. Like a devotion or meditation. I am going to document & share my experiences along the trails with you here. So please stay tuned to the sharing of part of my journey here on my Blog. I will also occasionally invite friends to join me on these walks in the woods for some Forest Healing. Please feel free to message me if you would be interested in joining me for some Healing in the Forest over the next year.

Aspects of Self

As I am determined to start being more devoted to getting the word out about many of the subjects I am passionate about, I am noticing I have many descriptors.

Artist. I believe this is one of the parts of myself I have been the longest. I cannot remember a time that I wasn't creating something. I love the rush and excitement that comes from the ideas and inspiration of new fabric art projects. I have been sewing & stitching since I was a young girl. I have some frustration though that I am afraid that I have so many Ideas for fabric art projects I want to create and not enough time in my life to actually complete them. I have started trying to keep the ideas together in a folder and to stop working on more than 1 project at a time. My current project is sort of a fabric art & spiritual experiment. I watched a video about Indigenous Peruvians purposefully wearing magickal & Spiritual symbols on their clothing. Doing so with the belief that these symbols could concentrate the energy of those symbols into their bodies for them to utilize. I have no desire to copy their designs because I have no right to do so, but I was inspired to use the symbols of my own ancestors as my expression of this technique.

Permaculturist. This has become a central point in my life. As using the Three Ethics of Permaculture are now affecting every decision in my life. I am so passionate about sharing the wisdom I feel is a gift from the Creator. Now I feel obligated to share this wisdom with everyone I can.

Master Gardener. Getting the Master Gardener certification under my belt was very important to me. I think I was struggling & feeling like I was treading water in my career path and that I would not advance without this certification. I am proud of this accomplishment and the sacrifices I had to make in my life to get this training done. Having worked in the green industry most of my adult life I felt I already knew a lot. Taking the course showed me I still had a lot to learn. For any gardener who really wants to understand their local soil, plant species, disease & insects this is a very important education resource. I also suggest not waiting until your retired to take this course. Your local county extension office has this program no matter which state you live in.

Teacher. Following my professional education through the Permaculture & Master Gardener courses definitely refined my own knowledge & skills. It also inspired a desire to share with others in larger groups. I continuously have the one-on-one education experience through my work. Being able to teach in a classroom environment is so much more rewarding for me. I feel I can help and engage so many more people at once. I feel like I am able to spread the wisdom that I am driven to share faster and on a larger scale. I am also looking to start classes that are geared more towards Pagan Traditions. Not just gardening.

Shaman. This has been a slow and arduous process over many lifetimes that is finally coming to fruition for me. Even in this lifetime I have felt so lost and unable to make the "right" connections for my personal Spiritual path. I feel confident that my lifes adventures & exploring has finally found a home. Now I just have to ground, breathe, pray and start the devotion. Making myself honor the importance of this in my life has now has become my center.

Pagan Activist/Community Organizer. During my personal Spiritual journey I encountered many others who were seeking community & support. Most folks in the Pagan Traditions seek this community without a traditional structure or church to go to. Seeing this need in myself and others I co-founded Pagans in the Park. We are Pagans from all Traditions who literally Gather together in community Parks. These are family friendly & fun weekly Gatherings where we discuss our individual paths, struggles, inspirations and celebration. We have chapters in Joplin, Missouri, Aurora, Colorado and Aberdeen, Washington. Being a leader or organizer in the Pagan Community is very rewarding for me as a facilitator of friendship & community. I really enjoy learning from others & sharing my own traditions as well. If you are interested in starting a chapter in your area please fel free to contact me.

Small Business Owner. As a natural result of my Artwork, Gardening Classes & Pagan Community work I needed a venue to share my work with others. My websites have had a few incarnations over the years. First as Mystic Motherwort and now Native Peace Healing Garden & Gifts. My website is continually being updated & worked on but it is a great way to share my work while I lack the ability to have a brick and mortar store. This is my eventual goal, but it will come to fruition when it is the right time & place. http://sheiliacanada.wix.com/nativepeacegifts

These are the overall broad definitions. I feel there are a few more that are very important to honor.

Author. This is a new incarnation that has developed out of my Gardening path. I have had the honor of writing several articles on the subject of gardening. I have found myself very comfortable writing and I hope to continue to have these opportunities. I believe that my attention and devotion to regular weekly blog posts will help me polish this skill.

Mom, Wife, Daughter, Sister. My devotion to my family and Ancestors is also a very important part of who I am. I hope that they are all proud of the work I have done so far and have yet to do.

Steward. This is probably one of the most important definers of who I am. I now consider myself a Steward of all of these different aspects of myself.

I hope sharing the different aspects of myself will help you look inside & see the many wonderful aspects of yourself or think of new definers you would like to have attached to you. It is time to go outside, ground & plant something so I will check back in next week. Warm Blessing to you

Day the world's nations agreed to protect the oceans and their creatures from pollution and over-harvest (1994);
Day to mourn continuing pollution and over-harvest. U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea: signed/adopted 12/10/1982; entered into force 11/16/1994.] [Text of Convention] For more information on the Convention, see U.N. Division for Ocean Affairs and Law of the Sea website. See also Wikipedia article on U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea Citizens for Global Solutions website. For information on ocean pollution and fisheries conservation, see Greenpeace website; EarthJustice website; Natural Resources Defense Counsel (N.R.D.C.) website. Fish stocks have collapsed in almost one-third of all ocean fisheries. The rate of decline is accelerating and total loss of fisheries could occur by mid-century. Fishery decline is caused by over-fishing the stock, the loss of marine biodiversity associated with the stock, pollution, and climate change. Establishing core protected areas for each surviving stock and preventing the stock from being fished above the maximum sustainable yield are crucial for its survival. For information about the collapse of fishery stocks, see U.N. Environment Program report "In Dead Water" National Center for Policy Analysis article Wikipedia article on Over-fishing.]
Birthday of Orello Cone (1835),
Universalist who believed that divine revelation comes from many sources. He believed science and religion could be complementary, and recognized that the Bible was written by fallible men. [Death day 6/23/1905] More on Orello Cone
Tolerance Day(AKA International Day of Tolerance) --Day to promote harmony in diversity through mutual respect and understanding of all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, culture, language, nationality, or economic status. Despite international and domestic laws providing for equal rights, freedoms, and protections, members of minority groups are still harassed and discriminated against because of societal intolerance arising from fear and ignorance. Intolerance often results from projection of "collective guilt": it is immoral to blame an entire group for the acts of a member unless the entire group empowered the member who acted or endorsed the acts. Krystallnacht-- Night of the Nazi attacks on Jewish homes, synagogues, and shops in Germany, beginning the persecution that would end with the deaths of six million Jews (1938) Tonight is a night for meditating on the evil of all religion-based hatred. Try to come up with solutions for eradicating this type of evil from our world. We should never allow such horror to ever happen again.
Birthday of Fr. Thomas Berry (1914),
Catholic priest, eco-theologian, and cosmologist, who advocated for deep ecology and eco-spirituality. He believed the Universe, our Solar System, and planet Earth, in themselves, and in their evolutionary emergence, constitute the primary revelation of the ultimate Mystery from which all things emerge into being. Twelve Principles for Understanding the Universe and the Role of the Human in the Universe Process by Thomas Berry 1. The Universe, the Solar System, and the planet Earth, in themselves and in their evolutionary emergence, constitute for the human community the primary revelation of that ultimate Mystery whence all things emerge into being. 2. The Universe is a unity, an interacting and genetically-related community of beings bound together in an inseparable relationship in space and time. The unity of planet Earth is especially clear: each being of the planet is profoundly implicated in the existence and functioning of every other being. 3. The capacity for ordered self-development, for self-expression, and for intimate presence to other modes of being must be considered as a pervasive psychic dimension of the Universe from the beginning. 4. The three basic laws of the Universe at all levels of reality are differentiation, subjectivity, and communion. These laws identify the reality, the values, and the directions in which the Universe is proceeding. 5. The Universe has a violent as well as a harmonious aspect, but it is consistently creative in the larger are of its development. 6. The Earth, within the Solar System, is a self-emergent, self-propagating, self-nourishing, self-educating, self-governing, self-healing, self-fulfilling community. All particular life-systems must integrate their being and their functioning within this larger complex of mutually dependent Earth systems. 7. The human emerges within the life systems of Earth as that being in whom the Universe reflects on and celebrates itself in a special mode of conscious self-awareness. The human is genetically coded toward further cultural coding, by which specifically human qualities find expression in a remarkable diversity in the various regions of the Earth. 8. Domestication: transition to village life and greater control over the forces of nature took place in the Neolithic period, 12,000 years ago; beginnings of agriculture, domestication of animals, weaving, pottery and new stone implements. 9. The classical civilizations: progressive alienation of the human from the natural world; the rise of cities, elaborate religious expression in ritual and architecture, development of specialized social functions, increase in centralized government, the invention of writing and related technologies. 10. The scientific- technological- industrial phase: the violent plundering of the Earth takes place, beginning in Europe and North America. The functioning of Earth is profoundly altered in its chemical balance, its biological systems, and its geological structures. The atmosphere and water are extensively polluted, the soil eroded, and toxic waste accumulates. The mystique of the Earth vanishes from human consciousness. 11. The ecological age: a new intimacy is sought with the integral functioning of the natural world; destructive anthropocentrism is replaced with eco-centrism; transition to the primacy of the integral Earth community. 12. The newly developing ecological community needs a mystique of exaltation and finds it in the renewal of the great cosmic liturgy, which celebrates the new story of the Universe and its emergence through evolutionary processes. Not letting fear & anxiety win...

"Love is what we were born with. Fear is what we learned here."
~ Marianne Williamson

Overcoming my fear is a struggle. Snow is coming in a predicted excessive amount today. I know, I know... I live in Colorado. Of course I am going to have to deal with snow & icy, dangerous, driving conditions.
I experienced a great loss when I was a Senior in High School. I loved this person very much & he was taken from me by a drunk driver just when we had finally found eachother again. This tragic loss instilled a fear that continued to grow & paralize me over the years.
I was so afraid to get behind the wheel of a vehicle I would go into a panic just thinking about the possibility of it. I feared hurting someone else the way I had been. Even being a passenger in a vehicle I began to avoid looking out the front window because I was afraid of every intersection, puddle of water, slick spot or other irresponsible drivers. I would stare out the side windows, & if the weather was bad, I would continually pray for a safe arrival throughout the whole trip. Praying from a place of fear, doubt & anxiety.
To my detriment, though I know it was from a place of love, those around me continued to drive me whenever I needed to go somewhere important. I walked ALOT. I have no idea how many miles have been put on these feet.
Due mainly to financial situations I was without a car for 4 years while living in Joplin, Mo. Which is a city that does NOT have a Public transportation system and many miles of road without sidewalks. My boys were young at this time so it was quite a struggle & difficult for them, because I walked them EVERYWHERE. So there is the guilt added on to the fear.
Additional guilt involves, because of my fear I was limited with my working life. I could only work at places that were close to my residence. This limited my contribution to the family finances, which led to my husband having to make up the difference.
When I was 26 I got a great job with a great company. I had to get my liscence in order to keep the position & be eligible for promotions because I had to make the night drop at the bank.
With help from my wonderful husband & a determination to overcome my fear that had limited so much of my life's potential; I studied & passed & got my drivers liscence. Yay, I conquered it & thought I was a doofus to have waited so long. But, not so fast...
My husband referred to me as an "excessive defensive driver" & encouraged me to be more confident & less skittish. He advised me that I was more likely to get in an accident or cause one because I am over-defensive. (By-the-way, my husband is a professional otr driver, so he definitely knows his stuff.)
I worked on that & tried to be more confident. Perhaps too confident. 2 years ago I got in my first personal car accident that involved an unexpected snow storm. I was not paying attention to the road conditions & driving too fast, for the conditions. I spun out & wrecked my car. Thankfully it was not totaled & my husband was able to band-aid my car back together.
The accident frightened me & now my fear & anxiety has returned with a vengence & transferred to driving in inclement weather. Luckily I have access to public transportation & I will be definitely accessing it during this storm.
I know I need to find a way to overcome this new fear. I will hopefully find a way to master this pain & get over it.

What fear do you struggle with?

Thoughts on today's Elder Meditation...

"A man should rely on his own resources; the one who so trains himself is ready for any emergency."

-- Oral Tradition, OMAHA

Man is designed to function independently and to rely on the Creator for his resources. If we build our relationship with the Great Spirit, we are ready when emergencies occur. We need to build a trusting relationship with the Creator. We do this by constantly talking with the Creator. It's good to talk to Him many times a day. Then we will realize, even though we can't see Him, that He is always with us and He is ready to respond to our requests.

God, let me remember to talk to You many times today.

Sometimes it is hard for me to be in a place where I can "constantly" talk with the Creator. Being a working mother & wife as many women are nowadays makes it difficult to take a break from the "Business" of life.
During the Winter months I cannot physically ground & connect with the Great Spirit as I enjoy doing in my gardens during Spring, Summer & Fall. So, it is very important for me to be more conscious of remembering to connect.
It is important to take those breaks; pause, breathe, ground & pray. I find myself needing to do this more often during this stressful time of year and it helps. Connecting with the Great Spirit several times throughout the day keeps me from loosing my temper, or from being frustrated or inpatient with others.
Connecting with the Great Spirit on a regular basis keeps me happy, calm, fulfilled. A better Mother, Wife, Daughter & Friend.

Sharing some wise words...

The following was shared with me today & I felt the need to share these wise words of Charles Bird King Red Jacket (Seneca) with others also.
His whole speech resonated with me such simple truth & is the best way I have seen as of yet, that describes my Spirituality & the legitimacy or right I have to be part of it over what other people may deem "acceptable worship".

In a discourse about Amerindian tolerance for the differences of others, Ronald Wright, in his history,* Stolen Continents, *relates a Seneca Chief'sresponse to the efforts of a White preacher to convert his people toChristianity: (can also be accessed at this URL http://www.danielnpaul.com/HistoryItemsAndCommunityEvents.html

"In a scene reminiscent of the debate between Franciscans and Aztec priests nearly 300 hundred years before, the formidable Red Jacket rose to reply. His answer is one of the best ever given to Christianity's claims. Which mentality, he makes one wonder, is the more primitive: that which believes itself to have a patent on truth or that which pleads for culturaldiversity, for tolerance, for mutual respect?" Wright

Chief Red Jacket's words: "Brother ... listen to what we say. There was a time when our forefathers owned this great island. Their seats extended from the rising to the setting sun. The Great Spirit had made it for the use of Indians. He had created the buffalo, the deer, and other animals for food. He had made the bear and the beaver. Their skins served us for clothing. He had scattered them over the country, and taught us how to take them. He had caused the earth to produce corn for bread....
If we had some disputes about our hunting ground, they were generally settled without the shedding of much blood.
But an evil day came upon us. Your forefathers crossed the great water and landed on this island. Their numbers were small. They found friends and not enemies. They told us they had fled from their own country for fear of wicked men, and had come here to enjoy their religion. They asked for a small seat. We took pity on them, granted their request; and they sat down amongst us.
We gave them corn and meat; they gave us poison in return. The white people, Brother, had now found our country. Tidings were carried back, and more came amongst us. Yet we did not fear them. We took them to be friends. They called us brothers. We believed them, and gave them a larger seat.
At length their numbers had greatly increased. They wanted more land; they wanted our country. Our eyes were opened, and our minds became uneasy. Wars took place. Indians were hired to fight against Indians, and many of our people were destroyed. They also brought liquor amongst us. It was strong and powerful, and has slain thousands.
Brother, our seats were once large and yours were small. You have now become a great people, and we have scarcely a place left to spread our blankets. You have got our country, but are not satisfied; you want to force your religion upon us.
Brother, continue to listen. You say that you are sent to instruct us how to worship the Great Spirit agreeably to his mind, and, if we do not take hold of the religion which you white people teach, we shall be unhappy hereafter.
You say that you are right and we are lost. How do we know this to be true?
We ... only know what you tell us about it. How shall we know when to believe, being so often deceived by the white people?
Brother, you say there is but one way to worship and serve the Great Spirit. If there is but one religion, why do you white people differ so much about it?... Brother, we do not understand these things. We are told that your religion was given to your forefathers, and has been handed down from father to son.
We also have a religion, which was given to our forefathers, and has been handed down to us, their children. We worship in that way. It teaches us to be thankful for all the favours we receive; to love each other, and to be united. We never quarrel about religion.
Brother, the Great Spirit has made us all, but he has made a great difference between his white and red children. He has given us different complexions and different customs.... Since he has made so great a difference between us in other things, why may we not conclude that he has given us a different religion?... Brother, we do not wish to destroy your religion, or take it from you. We only want to enjoy our own."

Been Awhile...

Yes, it has been a long time (Over a year.) since I have posted or checked in here. I am going to try to post in here more often. I am not sure anyone is listening, but it will just be a cathartic outlet for myself.
I just returned from a long journey to Topeka for Chris' court date. Then we continued out East to Ava, Missouri to retrieve the last of our belongings that were still in storage there.
It was good to leave that chapter behind. Closing the door on that part of my life felt good. Like I had made the right decision.
Honestly though being in Topeka made me keep wanting to head just a bit North to the Prairie Band Rez. I was looking continually for evidence of my Ancestors & only saw casino billboards.
I didn't stay long in Topeka as we were on a different mission, but I am confident if we ad stayed longer that 12 hours I would of encountered more information/connection. Topeka is not that far from here. (About an 8 hour drive.) So, maybe I can make another visit to the area. The drive through Kansas is so long though. I dread it every time.
I found an interesting website though http://www.wiskigeamatyuk.com/ that I am going to do some more researching on.
Back to work today & looking forward to Halloween with the boys.
I am also looking forward to working some more on my website & group & this blog.
Warmest Blessings,
Sheilia
